The Penn State Center collaborated with the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works Construction Division to design and install the city's first stormwater mitigation demonstration project in the Four Mile Run neighborhood of lower Greenfield. This project incorporates pervious concrete sidewalks and full depth curbs with curb channels to permit stormwater runoff to infiltrate the newly planted bioswales. Community volunteers, IUOE Local 95 members, Penn State Center staff and student interns planted trees, native perennials, and grasses. The project's goal is to alleviate the impact of storm events that plague this neighborhood. Previous concrete and installation training were donated by Bryan Materials Group with additional support from TreeVitalize and Councilman O'Connor.
