I would absolutely love to see a movie adaptation of this; the audience would be forced to believe that the stoic, silent child is the source of the evils. The dog's squeal would come from off camera, the snakes would come when she was near, and the subtle build-up would be enough to make you side with the town (almost) as they tossed her into the waters. And then as she fell beneath the murk and grim, you would see the truth. The monster she sent away to save the dog. The monsters she drove back from the barn, and the creature that almost killed Mrs P. If done well? It'd be a masterful twist. Without the narration, I think it'd be even more twisty. Just the story without the pretense that Ida was unlucky; just the actions and reactions of the townspeople. No monsters, just a silent, bloodied orphan, and the awful things that transpired around her. Sunken eyes, a torn nightgown, and a masterful cast? It would be one of my favorite films, hands down.

I know it's fake but stuff like this happened in the past, Women, Men, and even Children. murdered because bad things happened and people needed someone to blame.

So Ida's not a devils child but rather some sort of guardian protecting the town from evil creatures. The poor girl was blamed for the terrible things those monsters have done but she was containing them the best she could. I would adopt her!😢😭
