Veridian Symphony Orchestra performs Overture to The Marriage of Figaro- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart November 2016 in Yuba City, CA.
Conducted by Scott Seaton

The Marriage of Figaro is an opera buffa (or comic opera) in the Italian style, based on a play by Mozart’s contemporary, the French playwright Beaumarchais. The play was banned by King Louis XVI for its incendiary portrait - on the brink of the Revolution- of the French aristocracy’s unscrupulous use of power at the expense of the innocent serving class. Figaro, a valet to Count Almaviva, is at risk of having his bride-to-be abused by the ancient Droit du Seigneur, the right of an aristocrat to any virgin in his employ on the eve of her nuptials. Being comic rather than tragic, and being theater rather than history, all ends well, although it requires many ruses and disguises on the part of servants, clearly more clever and talented than their masters.
This overture – of the mood-setting genre- courses on an infectious gaiety and a rollicking rhythm which elicits the amateur conductor in anyone listening.
