Today, House Budget Committee Democrats voted against a motion offered by Rep. Jim Jordan to prohibit the use of Federal funds for abortion. Pro-life Democrats, led by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), have made clear that the health care overhaul before the House specifically permits taxpayer subsidies to flow to health care plans that cover abortion. The attempted compromise in the Senate amounts to little more than an accounting scheme, and would mark a clear departure from long-standing Federal policy against funding abortion procedures.
