Squalid NYC Tenements... How some of my ancestors lived after arriving in New York in the late 1800s from Ireland.
I made this slideshow from pictures in the archives of the NYC Dept of Tenement houses, from various Manhattan street scene photographs, and photos taken by pioneers like Jacob Riis who fought for better sanitary conditions among New York's poor. At the end is a 1-minute clip of one of the first motion pictures shot in NYC in 1903 by Thomas Edison, which shows a scene in the lower east side at the turn of the century titled "Move On" The music is from the soundtrack of "The Assassination of Jesse James"
