The Sergio Mendes neo-samba classic "So Many Stars" has been recorded hundreds of times by a range of artists from Tony Bennett, to Samba Brazil, to Sarah Vaughn to Mendes' own groundbreaking Brazilerio/Pop fusion group Brazil '66. My favorite version is Diana Panton's simple unadorned arrangement of "So Many Stars" on her recent album "If the Moon Turned Green." Ms. Panton's bittersweet plaintive vocal breathes new meaning into the song. As she expresses her yearning for the intoxication of newfound love , her melancholic vocal style suggests that she'll never find love because there are so many dreams, so many stars and so obstacles to finding romantic love.
