Ascension Island has a long and varied military history, and still plays a vital part as a logistics hub for the South Atlantic.

It is a key staging post linking Britain to the Falklands Islands, where planes can stop to refuel and change crews.

But as well as its role in the South Atlantic air bridge, the island could also function as a staging post for future operations.
