A Christmas Cantata

Tangos United Methodist Church
December 21, 2008

The Night before Christmas

GRANDDAD: (laughing)Are you excited, kiddo?

KELLY: Granddad, you know I am. This is the most exciting night of all!

GRANDDAD: Did you ever think about how exciting it must have been on that night in Bethlehem when a little Baby who would change the world was getting ready to be born?

KELLY: Tell the story again, Granddad. Please?

GRANDDAD: In those days King Cesar had made a law that said that everyone had to pay taxes in the city of his birth. That meant that Joseph had to travel a long way from Nazareth where He lived to Bethlehem where He had been born. And his wife, Mary, traveled with him even though she was going to have a baby, and that long trip was ever hard on her. When they arrived there was not a single empty room for them to rent. But what could they do? It was late, and they didnt know a soul in Bethlehem. Finally the Innkeeper let them stay in his stable. And there they settled down from the night. Now I expect most people in Bethlehem thought it was going to be just an ordinary night. But in that ordinary stable something wonderful was just about to happen!

FEMALE SOLOIST

It was the night before Christmas
And all through the world
Everything looked like business as usual.
Shepherds sat on the hillside looking up at the stars

BOTH

While the world fell asleep unaware just how deep,
was the darkness the night before Christmas.

MALE SOLOIST

And the night before Christmas
It seemed to be just a night,
But the wind blew like something was coming.

FEMALE SOLOIST

And like children with secrets that theyre bursting to tell,

BOTH

The cedar danced in the breeze, while all of nature it seemed
held its breath on the night before Christmas

SOLOISTS with CHURCH CHOIR

And hope, hope long awaited, the hope of the ages
Would break with the dawn and the song that all of creation
Was anticipating would start with the babys first cry

FEMALE SOLOIST

And on the night before Christmas,
Mary laid down to rest while Joseph he paced the floor praying.
And in everyday stable, (Ooooo..)
in an everyday town (Ooooo)

BOTH

In the hours to come (hours to come)
God would wrap Himself up (wrap Himself up)
And come down from heaven and the world would forever be changed
After the night before Christmas
.

lory to God!

GRANDDAD: And while they were there, the time came for the Baby to be born, and Mary gave birth to her firstborn Child, a Son. She wrapped Him in cloths and placed them in the manger. In the same area there were some shepherds staying out in the fields, watching over their flock that night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.
And the angel said to them, dont be afraid, for I bring you good news of a great joy for all the people. Today in the city of David a Savior has been born for you who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign: youll find a Baby wrapped in cloth, and lying in the manger. And suddenly there appeared with the one angel, thousands of other angels, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.

CHURCH CHOIR

Can you hear the noise, can you feel it rise?
Heavens come to earth, the light shines in dark.
Can you see it now? The angels gather around
To make the joyful sound all to Christ the King!

Open wide the gates, usher in the King!
Open up your hearts, let His glory in!

Glory to God!
Glory to God!
Glory to God in the highest!

Glory to God! (hallelujah!)
Glory to God! (hallelujah!)
Glory to God in the highest!
