In 2006, CARE, USAID and the government of Bangladesh launched the SHOUHARDO program. Aimed at reducing child malnutrition in the Bangladesh's poorest communities, the program's success stunned researchers. In less than four years, child stunting within the program's target population dropped 28 percent, or twice the annual rate of the typical USAID-funded malnutrition program.
