Honda exhibited the "Sports Modulo TYPE R" customized car at the 2008 Tokyo Auto Salon. The new concept model is based on the Civic Type R and is a part of the Modulo custom brand from Honda Access Corporation.

The Sports Modulo TYPE R was developed to unite design and the effective aerodynamic performance achieved in racing. Based on a design theme of "flowing, blocking, and cutting off air flow", the aerodynamic parts use air flow to achieve necessary down force and were designed to regulate air flow so that it flows smoothly from the front to the sides as well as above and below the car.

Changes were made in the interior to emphasize the focus on circuit driving. For example, the positions of the speedometer and tachometer were changed, bucket seats were adopted, and carbon fiber components were used in the door panels to achieve a more lightweight design. The vehicle is also equipped with a new dash display that shows damper settings and tire pressure and sports a steering wheel with integrated shift indicators.
