Local lawmakers, community leaders and residents of all five Philadelphia counties have pledged to take the Greater Philadelphia Food Stamp Challenge. From April 23-29, participants will live on the average food stamp benefit—$5 a day in Philadelphia—for the entire week.

The Food Stamp Challenge kicked off with a press event Monday, April 23 at ShopRite of Parkside. In attendence were State Sen. Vincent Hughes; State Rep. Tony Payton; Mayor Michael Nutter; Congressman Bob Brady; State Rep. Vanessa Brown, State Sen. Shirley Kitchen, State Rep. Cherelle Parker and other community leaders.

Participants also shopped for their week's worth of groceries on the $5-a-day allotment.
