On June 16, 2011, Longwood Gardens commissioned a solar field that began generating electricity on May 27. The field will produce about 2 million kilowatt hours per year, which is the electrical equivalent of powering 181 average homes. It is expected to offset Longwood's energy consumption by nearly 28% and can reduce the Gardens' annual carbon dioxide emissions by 1,367 tons.
