You're probably familiar with Monsieur Georges Duboeuf -- he's the founder of the number one French brand of wine in this country! I played 'Three's Company' on a recent trip to Dallas that had old friends Georges and Bill Deutsch, chairman of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, discussing the finer points of Beaujolais.
The beautiful flowers on the label make for a fun origin tale, but it's what's inside that counts! Nearly all Beaujolais' are fruit-forward wines that pair beautifully with food (burgers anyone?). Wines from individual crus are especially impressive...like the Fleurie, a complex offering aged in oak for six months that tastes of plums and raspberry. Château des Capitans is a Burgundy whose "quality is fantastic" according to Georges. I have to agree!
While most Beaujolais' are red wines, they produce a limited selection of Chardonnays worth your time. And by the way, all of the Georges Duboeuf wines sell for less than $20!
