This video shows how I make my backpacking tarps. I use 3-4 mil black plastic sheeting that can be purchased from lowes or wal mart. For 250 sq ft at $17, you can afford to experiment with tarp shelters. I don't pretend that this is the strongest material available, but for lightweight 3 season use, and under $20 a roll, Its perfect. I've used this exact material on hikes from the AT to the Arizona back country and into the Rockies. If you practice a little tarp safety sense you can avoid rips and tears. But don't worry, duct tape saves the day every time! I haven't had a single instance where this tarp has failed. It does stretch a little, but if you're using taught line hitches, you can easily retension the tarp. I hope you find this video useful and have a chance to experiment with tarp camping!
