Nearly half of war rape victims are children, many who are impregnated every day through rape used as a weapon of war. For these girls and women, they are routinely denied access to safe abortions, largely due to the US Helms amendment, which has led to a US policy that places an abortion ban on all humanitarian aid.
With the UN reporting on growing attacks on school girls worldwide and recent recognition that promoting women’s equality is key to lasting peace, it is now more urgent than ever that women are given their basic rights under the Geneva Conventions.
