Primarily a survey of the intellectual life in ancient Alexandria, the Third Annual Elizabeth Dafoe Memorial Lecture featuring Dr. Don McCarthy identifies the more important mathematicians, astronomers and other scientists who lived there, and there connection with the Museum and the Great Library next to it.
Also examined are some of the features of the philosophy, theology, and scriptural studies of scholars in the Jewish and Christian communities of Alexandria. Attention is given to Hypatia, probably the greatest female intellectual of the ancient world.
