Dr Antonio Almeida - Portuguese Institute of Oncology, Lisbon
Dr Antonio Almeida discusses the advances in the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Traditionally clinicians were only able to offer supportive care such as transfusion for this chronic disease, however modern treatments can significantly improve the outlook for elderly MDS patients. There is a need for education to raise awareness of these options both among patients and health care professionals. Dr Almeida talks about the prospect of MDS patients becoming transplant independent, the benefits this bring to the patient, the difference in prognosis between low risk and high risk patients and the treatment options that are available.
