1987 film based on Simon Gray's successful West End play of the same year.

Set in the 1960s at a school in Cambridge for the teaching of English to foreign students.

The lives and problems of the characters half a dozen teachers and the assistant Headmaster Eddie are revealed in the teachers staffroom, which is the setting of most scenes.

Terms as used in the title refers not only to Quartermaine himself but to the school terms which provide a structure for both the play and the characters lives.

With Edward Fox (St.Joohn Quatermaine), John Gielgud (Eddie), Eleanor Bron (Melanie), Peter Jeffrey (Henry), Clive Francis (Mark), Paul Jesson (Derek) and Tessa Peake-Jones (Anita).
