Maurice Jaubert (1900-40) was, before he was killed in wartime action, a leading French composer of film scores, and a friend of Ravel, Honneger and Auric. This waltz ('Grey Waltz') comes from his score to Julien Duvivier's 'Un Carnet de Bal' (1937), a nostalgic film in which a widow revisits men with whom she once danced at a ball. The piece was apparently inspired by Sibelius's 'Valse Triste'.
