I use this fly as my point fly (dropper) about 75% of the time when I'm fishing a subsurface tandem fly rig for Spring steelhead. I almost always fish it about 8" down from a chartreuse, blood dot egg pattern. I usually tie this pattern in sizes 12 and 14, but some people will use a size 16 when the river is really clear. If the river has some color, this fly tied in black will offer a stronger silhouette. If the river really clouds up, I switch to a slightly flashier soft hackle pattern in sizes 10 and bigger (see my other video "Lake Superior Steelhead: Tying a Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail Nymph").
