John was a fine teacher, mentor, and musicologist who was particularly recognized for his scholarship on the composer Robert Schumann. I am fortunate to count John as one of the important musical mentors early in my studies at Boston University. He was not only a gifted teacher who always found a way to frame the history of music in an interesting, exciting way, but was also a talented violinist. In an act of generosity typical of John, he consented to premiere a work of my as a young undergraduate composer, "Sonata for Violin and Four Voices" in 1985. The Elegy is based on the musical materials from the second movement of that earlier work. For more information, please visit http://www.ggrcomposer.com; http://johndaverio.bu.edu/biography.html
