2009 Connexions Youth Forum short film

Produced by the Documentary Media Society in partnership with the National Film Board of Canada.

About the forum:
The Connexions Youth Forum is an annual educational program designed and dedicated to fostering documentary filmmaking and storytelling skills in youth between 19 and 26 years of age. In partnership with the National Film Board of Canada, Connexions immerses young aspiring documentary filmmakers through workshops, mentoring sessions and attendance at the DOXA Festival.

Each year, the Forum focuses on a demographic that faces barriers and has limited access to documentary filmmaking.
In 2009 the emphasis was placed on gender equality. The BC Institute of Film Professionals 2005 report on Womens Labour Issues states women film professionals are seriously under-represented in certain occupations, especially at higher levels. To help address the disparity, DOXA put out a call to young women with basic film training, who have a desire to work in the documentary form.

Six young women participated in a 9-day intensive workshop that focused on the art of storytelling using digital media. The Forum also provided the opportunity for participants to network with each other and experienced filmmakers throughout the week as they created their own documentary project that screened on the closing night of the DOXA Festival.
