October 1993 - An assessment of the impact media coverage has had on the war in Somalia.
American stomachs were turned by pictures of mutilated American soldiers dragged through the streets. American troops were quickly ordered home. Not so widely seen pictures of an American attack on a meeting house prompted a similar about-turn in Somali public opinion. Minutes after the attack four journalists were hacked to death by furious mobs. Ahmed Hassan, the man who made the video, tells how he was surprised by the effect his video had on the fighting. Somalis now taunt UN tanks by parking their cars in front of them and some fear that when the UN finally goes home there will be no media left in Somalia to turn World public opinion.
A film by Mark Stucke.
