On February 24 2011 in Riverdale, New York the Ramaz Rams (9-1)(11-2) won the National Conference North division of the MJDSBL by defeating the SAR Sting(8-2) by the score of 38-35.
This was one of the grittiest and gutsiest performances I have witnessed in my Ramaz 11 year middle school coaching career. I stressed in my pregame talk to leave it all on the court and my plead was answered. It was not a smooth ballet as basketball to me often is, but more of a down and out brawl.
The first half saw us in deep foul trouble, with Gabe Roth and Ben Rabinowitz saddled with 3 fouls each. John Hirschfeld did the best he could off the bench, along with key minutes by Jordan Rapaport and tremendous defense and determination by Josh Buksbaum.
SAR which beat us a month ago at Ramaz was once again led by their 6`3" center and 2 power forwards standing 6'2" each. The first half was a defensive struggle with both teams having multiple turnovers. We held a small lead throughout the first half and went in to halftime tied at 18-18.
Behind co-captain Gabe Manchild Roth who was relentless on the boards with 25 rebounds and 17 points and 2 beautifully balanced jumpshots by Gabe Low helped us to pull away. Good contributions by Ben Jaspan, with 5 points and good boards, Ben Rabinowitz with 6 big points and co-captain Matthew Abrahams running the offense almost to perfection.
I am extremely proud of our boys. They were determined to win and didn't lose focus of their objective. - Andrew Weitzen
