Professor of Marine Sciences Rick Luettich is an expert on many things coastal, but his deepest area of expertise is hurricanes. He studies storm surge most closely and worries the current category system used to classify hurricanes doesn't adequately warn about the dangers posed by the storms.
He serves as the director of UNC-Chapel Hill's Institute for Marine Sciences and the Center for the Study of Natural Hazards and Disasters. Luettich is also a professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering in UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health.
