3D animation that shows the technique of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)

Directional drilling (or slant drilling) is the practice for drilling non-vertical wells. Obstacles and other objects can be by-passed using this computer controlled technique. With HDD, the drilling equipment, which connects to the drilling tube on the surface, pulls the cable, casing pipes or pipeline through the ground. This avoids the need for costly excavation.

The drilling process is divided into 3 steps:

1. Pilot (drill head or drill bit)
2. Reaming (by a fly-cutter)
3. Pull-in (barrel reamer)
