(17 Apr 2020) Portuguese police and security forces on Friday paid tribute to medical staff and other healthcare professionals by visiting dozens of Lisbon's hospitals with special motorcades and a marching band.
In two of the capital's main hospitals dealing with the outbreak of the new coronavirus, Portugal's national anthem was played as dozens of nurses, doctors and other workers gathered outside emergency entrances for the special tribute.
Video showed motorcades leaving Lisbon's historic Monastery of Jeronimos before proceeding to visit the hospitals.
In a sign of appreciation, healthcare workers were seen applauding police and security forces at the end of the tributes.
Portugal has so far reported around 19,000 positive cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, and 657 deaths.
The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.
