Having access to sufficient high-quality literature is problematic for most schools worldwide, especially those in developing countries. Further complicating the problem is that children have varied interests for which they want to learn, ranging from sports to science fiction to critters on the playground. Word reading skills are the foundation upon which vocabulary and comprehension are built. As children increase their ability to read words in context, they improve their knowledge of word meaning and content. Success in reading today differs considerably from previous generations as nearly an equal amount of texts are read in digital environments as traditional print. Our Big Idea is to create a portable reading device - MyReadingTablet (MRT) –equipped with software that will allow diverse learners to successfully navigate complex texts despite limited reading proficiencies. The hundreds of e-books pre-loaded on MRT will feature a variety of topics/genres to spark curiosity and reading motivation. The most innovative aspect of MRT is the reader’s ability to adjust the reading level of the e-books. Presently, there is no existing technology that provides for unknown words to be directly switched for another word, let alone a word of an easier readability with the same meaning. This aspect of MRT sets it apart from other devices and will revolutionise digital reading for beginning readers.
