Brawl among opposing groups at the foot of the Confederate Soldiers' Memorial on 6/29/2015.
An Irmo man was arrested after a fight broke out over the Confederate flag in front of the State House Monday night, officials say.
Nicholas Thompson, 25, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after confronting a crowd protesting the Confederate flag, South Carolina Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Sherri Iacobelli said in a statement released Monday night.
A local group of pro-flag citizens circled the statehouse in opposition to efforts to remove it from it's current location. As they approached the protesters they were stopped by a traffic light. At the point protesters allegedly grabbed one of the confederate flags and the driver exited his vehicle.
Police were unable to control the crowd and over the next thirty minutes two additional altercations occurred. One man was punched in the face and had blood streaming down his face. Another cowered on the ground as he was kicked in the head.
Reinforcements were called in and the blocks surrounding the capitol were blocked off.
Asked if Gervais Street near the Confederate Memorial would be closed in the future, Smith said it would depend on the situation.
Protesters remain on the State House grounds and law enforcement has been increased to monitor them.
According to local sources the protesters were actually members of rival gangs that came together to oppose the confederate flag flying on statehouse grounds.
