installing nail-down hardwood floors.

It seems like every contractor I've ever hired just wants to get the job done as quickly as possible, so they can move on to the next job. That's why I'm installing my own hardwoods right now. It may take a lot longer but this way I know its done to my standards.

Anybody whos comment is that this is wrong obviously doesnt know that he is nailing down unfinished hardwood, the floors still need to be sanded and finished. If the floors were pre finished he would be a lot more careful. This guy is a pro try to handle a 45 degree nailer that fast not knowing what youre doing and you'll take a toe off. My hat off to this guy i need him in my crew. I am a 3rd generation hardwood floor expert, i do commercial and residential work for anybody who thinks my opinion is not valid.

Stairstepping with random lengths is the only way idiots its been that way for a couple hundred years you onlys need to worry about it when ever board is the same length this is the way pros nail it if you want us to slow down Pay us more a square foot you cheap bastards this is the way it's period

Watching this makes me cringe.  Given the quality control of contemporary solid hardwood milling it is important to sort out mismatched thickness within a given row.  This could have happened when the floor was racked, but is doubtful given the panic attack being demonstrated here.  The nailing appears alarmingly inconsistent as well.  No doubt this guy would leave me in the dust in terms of speed.  However I'd rather live with my painfully slow attention to detail and corresponding snail's pace installation.  Contractor displays such as this make the DIY alternative quite compelling.

I see a lot of negative comments. The thing that sticks out to me is the "stair stepping" in a couple areas. It takes time to lay out a room. If you're going to take the time to lay it out, there's no excuse to have the stepping like there is here. We never lay out the floor like this. It's a good idea, but not sure how well it would work or if it would save any time.
