Dr. Naidu Rayapati, plant pathologist at WSU, is using an ingenious method to diagnose crop diseases throughout the world. By adapting a simple FTA card, he and his team can collect virus, bacteria and fungal DNA samples from plants in Africa, Asia, South America, etc. and bring them back to labs in Washington for diagnosis. The FTA card allows them to bypass the usual stringent rules barring plant introduction into the U.S.
