An adaptation of Alex Garland's acclaimed novel, The Beach is a movie about a backpacker named Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his quest to find the ultimate paradise. Disgusted with the inauthenticity of common society, Richard treks across Asia while avoiding all tourist settings at all costs. In a shoddy Bangkok hotel, Richard meets a man who appears to be insane and calls himself Daffy. Daffy tells Richard of a paradise unlike any other; a paradise in its purest form, untouched by humans exploiting nature. When Richard awakens to find a crudely drawn map and that Daffy had killed himself, he decides to embark on a journey to find this paradise lagoon. The Beach features a strong isolated island atmosphere and plenty of gorgeous scenery and backdrops. The plot starts somewhat like an adventure romance but becomes increasingly more unorthodox until a climatic ending that breaks any stereotype it may have set earlier in the movie.
