Because the government has the regulatory power, it has the ability control the market and drive out competition. Stifling competition not only affects prices, which the government of course can make up with taxes, but it also can affect the quality of care. Some argue the government is putting some restrictions to prevent itself from doing that, but that is a very dangerous proposition that will basically be driven by whoever is in power.
