NEW FASTER METHOD: https://youtu.be/oij4e37gHXQ
*********************************************************
Step 1: Make a "ghost" display
Step 2: Extend your ghost display
Step 3: Install a remote desktop software (eg. Teamviewer)
Step 4: Connect your laptop to your desktop using Teamviewer (or any other remote desktop software)
Step 5: Switch displays and DONE!

To make Teamviewer faster (via LAN connection):
1. Under extras, select settings.
2. In the General tab, make sure "Incoming LAN connections" is set to accept.
3. Teamviewer will connect via LAN, not through Internet, if possible, making preview faster.

Disabling input from the other computers:
1. Press the "<" arrow on the right of the screen (if the control panel isn't open already)
2. Next to the connected user, click on the cursor icon (this will disable the remote input for that user)
3. The icon should turn to a cursor with a strike.

Missing cursor or desktop wallpaper? (or secondary computer is outputting sound?
-Please refer to 4:11 of the video, there are some settings to change

Some other remote desktop software you can use are ZoneOS and MaxiVista.
If you cannot make a ghost display using the method shown above, try these few methods below.
____________________________________________________________________________
Method 1 (ZoneOS): http://www.zoneos.com/zonescreen.htm
ZoneOS is a software which allow you to use any computer as a second monitor. It comes with a virtual desktop driver, instead of depending on your current graphics card to connect a ghost display.
It is a little tricky to setup due to some limitations.
"Windows Vista and Windows 7 have two important limitations affecting ZoneScreen Virtual Display Driver. First, when ZoneScreen Driver (which is XPDM) is running, Aero effect is disabled (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/...). You have to disable Aero manually (by enabling 'Basic' color scheme) before attaching ZoneScreen Display to ensure stable transition. The second problem is that Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 have x64 digital signature enforcement for kernel drivers applied so ZoneScreen Virtual Display Driver that is not loaded unless this enforcement is disabled. Here (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/aa90...) are details on booting Windows into Test Mode. And here (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/F...) you can find instructions on disabling the enforcement permanently."

Method 2 (VirtualMonitor): http://virtualmonitor.github.io/
If ZoneOS doesn't work out for you, which didn't for me since it doesn't really support Windows 7/8, you can try using VirtualMonitor. It is still in development stage, so don't expect it to be bug-free.

Method 3 (TightVNC): http://superuser.com/a/152219
Someone posted this solution on the forums. Thought I might as well share it with you guys and see if it works for you.

Method 4 (VGA Cable):
If you have a spare VGA cable around, connect it to the host computer, and under Screen Resolution you will find that another screen has been connected, although the other end is not connected. The ghost monitor is then created.
TESTED ON:
Host Computer: Windows 8.1 Pro
2nd Computer: Windows XP, Mac OS X Yosemite, Windows 7 (basically anything that can run Teamviewer and can switch)
NOTICE: Even though these OS have been tested, that does not mean your configuration will definitely work!
