Amazing day. I got the call at around 5:00am from my colleague at TVB who'd already been up and reporting on the official announcement that China's Paramount Leader Deng Xiaoping had died. February 19th 1997. I'll save the details of that call for my book.
This live shot took place outside the New China News Agency, the scene of many pre-handover anti-China protests. The Cosmopolitan Hotel now occupies that space. I did manage to get inside to witness some of the dignitaries offering their official condolences. The place was a dump inside.
