In Serbia, polyvalent (multi-function) nurses provide home-based support to families from the beginning of a pregnancy through the early years. Polyvalent nurses help prepare women and their partners for the birth and with the changes entailed in becoming a parent. After a woman is discharged from the maternity ward with her newborn, the polyvalent nurse conducts home visits to provide health information and education.
For vulnerable families or families where the child is at risk because of disabilities or developmental difficulties, the nurse may provide additional support and link families with the services of other sectors. In Serbia, the polyvalent nurse is considered "a friend of the family".
