Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - Opening Remarks at the Symposium on The Future Networked Car, Geneva Motor Show, 2016.

On 3 March 2016, ITU and UNECE convened the Symposium on The Future Networked Car within the 86th Geneva International Motor Show.

Intelligent transport systems and automated driving are fast moving towards widespread commercialization and market acceptance. High levels of automation – the penultimate step to fully automated driving – are expected on the road by 2020 and hold great promise to improve road safety, reduce congestion and emissions, and increase the accessibility of personal mobility to the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Held on the first public day of the Geneva International Motor Show, this international symposium will bring together representatives of vehicle manufacturers, the automotive and information and communication technology (ICT) industries, governments and their regulators to discuss the status and future of vehicle communications and automated driving. The Future Networked Car will examine advances in the area of connected vehicles, from the perspectives of business, technology and regulation. Technical sessions will highlight the crucial roles of connectivity, information security and privacy. The symposium will also discuss how standards bodies can best collaborate to meet industry needs and to achieve interoperability.
