Reid is the end of the double track section that extends from CP Lake, near Lexington, by Spencer Yard, and through Salisbury. To the south is the first single track section that southbound trains encounter on the Charlotte District. The dispatcher set up a meet with hot-shot northbound train 212 and Macon, GA-bound manifest 119. 119 was also told to wait for the rapidly-approaching Amtrak 75 before proceeding south. In just over 3 minutes, 75 was able to jump ahead two blocks, giving 119 with a diverging clear signal to proceed south.
