With increased mobility in the world today, the globalization of sports has become a reality. Today more and more athletes are leaving their home countries in pursuit of better training to enhance their lives and empower them to change their countries. This documentary will cover the main characteristics that drive athletes to pursue their Lexus: ambition, motivation, training, competition, and prosperity, as well as their olive trees: nationalism, identity, tradition, and representation. The Lexus is a persons drive and desire that is enabled by globalization. The olive tree is the idea that defines what a person calls home and gives them passion and pride for a place. Also a focus of this documentary is foreign athletes who have trained at Auburn University that have or strive to compete in the Olympics games. There are currently forty-one foreign athletes participating in the various athletic programs at Auburn University. Auburn had an impressive showing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China with twenty-nine former and current foreign athletes competing in the games, with two winning gold medals. In fact, if Auburn University were considered a country, it would be the sixty-fifth highest largest participating nation in the Olympics. The purpose of this documentary is the hope to communicate that globalization affects every aspect of life, exemplified through the example of how sports links cultures all around the world. Any student at Auburn University can identify with the diversification of sports because every student is passionate about one or more sports at Auburn University. People can be positively influenced through interacting with the foreign athletes and seeking to understand foreign cultures and the reverse of allowing them to take knowledge from the U.S. back to their homes.
