As the United Nations General Assembly convenes this week with an emphasis on the Rule of Law, Max Marcus, an expert on criminal investigations and prosecutions of gender-based crimes talks to UN Women on how far we have come in the process and where we need to go. Among other things, Ms. Marcus was the first gender expert seconded by UN Women (then UNIFEM) to an international Commission of Inquiry in Guinea.

In early September 2012, Ms. Marcus participated in a symposium on using international prosecutions to strengthen gender justice that was co-hosted in The Hague by UN Women and Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice. She also participated a trainer during a week-long training session on "Investigating Cases of Sexual and Gender-based Violence as International Crimes," that aimed to increase the pool of experts that can be rapidly deployed to lead and participate in investigations into conflict-related gender-based crimes.

A collaborative project between UN Women, Justice Rapid Response and the Institute for International Criminal Investigations, the training course in The Hague was the first of a series of two courses, the second of which will be held in Pretoria, South Africa, from January 28 to February 1, 2013.
