SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE 1798 1834 There calls the Mariner there comes a ship over the lineBut how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide See... onward she comes onward she nears out of the sunSee... she has no crew she has no life wait but there 39 s twoDeath and she Life in Death they throw their dice for the crewShe wins the Mariner and he belongs to her nowThen... crew one by one they drop down dead two hundred menShe... She Life in Death she lets him live her chosen one One after one by the star dogged moon too quick for groan or sighEach turned his face with a ghastly pang and cursed me with his eyeFour times fifty living men and I heard nor sigh nor groan With heavy thump a lifeless lump they dropped down one by one. SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE 1798 1834 Part 2 The curse it lives on in their eyesThe Mariner he wished he 39 d dieAlong with the sea creaturesBut they lived on so did heAnd by the light of the moonHe prays for their beauty not doomWith heart he blesses themGod 39 s creatures all of them tooThen the spell starts to breakThe albatross falls from his neckSinks down like lead into the SeaThen down in falls comes the rainHear the groans of the long dead seamenSee them stir and they start to riseBodies lifted by good spiritsNone of them speak and they 39 re lifeless in their eyesAnd revenge is still sought penance starts againCast into a trance and the nightmare carries onNow the curse is finally liftedAnd the Mariner sights his homeSpirits go from the long dead bodiesForm their own light and the Mariner 39 s left aloneAnd then a boat came sailing toward himIt was a joy he could not believeThe Pilot 39 s boat his son and the hermitPenance of life will fall onto HimAnd the ship it sinks like lead into the seaAnd the hermit shrieves the Mariner of his sinsThe Mariner 39 s bound to tell of his storyTo tell his tale wherever he goesTo teach God 39 s word by his own exampleThat we must love all things that God madeAnd the wedding guest 39 s a sad and wiser manAnd the tale goes on and on and on........................................................... 39 Rime Of The Ancient Mariner 39 is a song from Iron Maiden 39 s album 39 39 Powerslave 39 39 released in 1984. 39 39 Based on the famous 1798 poem originally entitled The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere and re written in 1817 mainly in order to modernise the archaic spelling by Samuel Taylor Coleridge 1772 1834 this is Maiden 39 s greatest epic ballad. With a length of over 13 and a half minutes it is also their longest song. 39 39 39 39 To conclude it seems that The Rime of the Ancient Mariner captures an age old dilemma: man 39 s essential apartness in his loneliness. Man is alienated from the world. Hell according to some iconoclastic theologians is nothing more than such isolation i.e. it is a state of mind . Subsequently all of the above contribute to the poem 39 s lasting appeal. Each reader leaves the poem like the Wedding Guest a sadder and a wiser man that is he or she is inititiated into the higher mystery which was shown to the Mariner through great suffering. 39 Source:www.ironmaidencommentary.com
