The Byrds went through three distinct musical phases, the last one being their psychedelic phase with the Gene Parsons, Skip Battin and Clarence White line up. This band specialised in extended jam versions of The Byrds hits. Wheels on Fire was recorded in subdued form on an early Byrds album but took off when played live in 1970. The Substitutes have tried to capture the psychedelic spirit of that version.
