On Dec. 15, 2012, Southern Methodist University in Dallas became the first university west of Ohio to graduate students with Bachelor of Arts degrees in human rights-Samantha Matthews and Shirin Tavakoli. "Human rights is an increasingly important area of study, and we look forward to the great work of these future human rights leaders and innovators," said SMU President R. Gerald Turner. Matthews will pursue non-profit work focused on helping children and refugees. Tavakoli, who also earned degrees in political science and international studies, plans to study international humanitarian law with an emphasis on women's rights.
