After a prolonged dry season in Tsavo, Kenya, Kuishi's mother collapsed in November 2016 leaving her tiny, emaciated calf to stand stand vigil over her mum's body despite being on the brink of starvation herself.

After three days alone in near drought conditions without food, water or company, Ukame must have been close to giving up. Growing weaker by the hour in the searing heat, when it became clear no passing herds would adopt her, we stepped in to rescue this milk dependent two and a half year old calf.
