When soldering a thin gold chain to a jump ring for a clap you must flux all the metal including the gold solder before. I like to place the solder onto the gold jump ring and heat it only until it tacks on, does not melt. When the solder is ready, clap the jump ring in a non-locking tweezer and carry the jump over to the chain. The gold chain is barely heated at all.
