Imagine if we only had health programs for people who live in wealthy neighbourhoods. Would that be enough?
We’ve learned a lot about how different working and living conditions affect our health and productivity. But we don’t know enough about what solutions can have the biggest impact. The better our solutions, the more we can improve health for everyone. It starts with research.
Population and public health research helps us to understand what public health strategies work, for whom, and under what conditions. Many of our biggest health challenges can be prevented, but they can’t be solved one person or one sector at a time. We need evidence-informed solutions that reduce the risk of premature death. But we also need solutions that help all people have the same opportunities and outcomes for health.
As part of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Institute of Population and Public Health is playing a transformative role in promoting better health for all.
We fund cutting-edge research that shines a light on the underlying social, cultural and environmental factors that impact health. We’re supporting world class researchers, who work with diverse partners to tackle pressing public health needs. We’re supporting research on policies to reduce health risks for entire communities. And in the last five years, we’ve invested $21 million in health equity research to create equal opportunities for health—no matter where people live, learn, work or play. There’s more exciting work underway, and plenty more to come.
This research will lead to better public health policies, programs and actions—both in Canada and globally. Our field is not just about studying problems. It’s also about finding the solutions that save money, improve population health – and leave no one behind.
We’re accelerating the science of solutions for a healthy and equitable world.
