"waiting / distant thunder" is the second in the long-overdue return to the video format, and curiously, it's another composite video similar to "on the brink of euphoria" - with one major difference, one of the two sections of this track, features my rather reluctant ebow (at first, anyway) so the first half is Bill Nelson-style clean lead guitar, while the second half, is Bill Nelson-style clean energy bow guitar.
so, once again, uncharacteristically, I have done something that I very rarely do, I have taken two different takes, and merged them into one video - because I felt that both of the takes had merit, but each also had it's issues - so by simply merging the first half of one take, with the second half of another - we have a new musical creation that has the strengths of both takes, and none of the weaknesses. Again, a really pleasant, clean lead guitar on the first half, which led me perfectly up to the composite / swap over to the ebow - which is the perfect way to take the song to it's conclusion.
in this case, I am using the electro-harmonix "ravish" pedal, to capture a frozen chord of harmonics, that acts as an "instant" loop, and then I simply play a clean guitar solo over the top of this instant background, and in this instance, following that up with a clean ebow solo. it's a lot of fun, because you can literally just capture a chord or a set of harmonics, and then simply hold down the button for as long as you like - even if that is for the entire duration of the song!
so it's not looping as I normally do, using a looper, but, it is looping in one sense: I have an ambient background, that is created "live" at the beginning of the take - that I then solo over, so that's similar indeed to the sound and purpose of "normal" looping. I love the "freeze" function of the "ravish" pedal, and I did a lot of experiments with it during the session and the sessions that followed during January, 2017.
so this second composite video, comes from the second of three different sessions, from the 19th, 22nd, and 23rd of January, 2017 - so this take is from the January 22nd session - and for upcoming videos, well, most of them will go back to my established tradition of them being totally live - I capture a chord, freeze it, hold it, and then play an entire take on top of it without stopping. I promise you - that is what the next video will be!
“waiting / distant thunder” was recorded to digital on January 22, 2017, in two live takes, these were later blended together, for both the audio version of the song, as well as for this video - to create this special composite take.
