A peaceful, contemporary piano recording (with some cello, strings, and oboe) of the folk song Oh Shenandoah, arranged and performed by Joel Rosenberger.

A number of stories surround Oh Shenandoah, ranging from the love of an Indian chief's daughter, to American Civil War soldiers missing home, to Virginia settlers driving their wagons west across the Missouri River. I wanted my piano arrangement to capture the sense of longing that comes from missing home, loved ones, and times that are gone; as well as the mystery surrounding the origins of the lyrics. This video sets the folk tune against the backdrop of American Civil War era photos, focusing not so much on the battles, but on the people and places of that era.

All photos are thought to be in the public domain.

Technical production details: Produced using Ableton Live and Synthogy's Ivory. Cello and other instruments are mostly from Ableton's Essential Instrument Collection. I'm happy to talk shop.

Oh Shenandoah
I long to see you
Away you rolling river
Oh Shenandoah
I long to see you
Away I'm bound away
'Cross the wide Missouri.
