My Other Half - Chapter 75
The next morning, I open my eyes up to the sound of someone outside, sorting through wood. I check my watch and it's 5am. I look around and see Dani, Miley and Selena still deep in their sleep. Confused, I sit up and stretch a bit before walking out of the tent. Joe was sitting on the ground, trying to start the fire. He had on a black hoodie and his hair was all over the place.
He looks up at me and smirks. "Hey. You're up early."
"So are you," I say, sitting down next to him. "Why are you trying to start a fire at 5 in the morning?" I ask. He smiles and throws the wood to the side.
"It's freezing out here," Joe points out, looking over at me. I shiver and rub my hands up and down my bare arms. I hadn't realized it till now that my teeth are chattering. "Where's your sweatshirt?" he asks.
"Miley is wearing it, she got hers wet yesterday at the lake," I tell him.
"Here, I'll grab one of mine. Stay here," he says, getting up and running over to his tent. I wait for Joe to come back and when he does, he helps me slip on the sweatshirt. I smile slightly to myself as he sits back down next to me.
"So why are you up this early?" I ask him.
"I couldn't sleep," Joe says. "Plus, I wanted to watch the sun rise.." He looks up at the sky. "Now would be the perfect time for that." He turns to me. "Do you want to come with me?"
"Where?" I ask.
"Just out to sit by the lake where there's a clear view of the sky," Joe says, getting up. He reaches down and offers me his hand. I take it and he pulls me up. We start to walk into the woods to get to the lake. I look down and I expect Joe to let go of my hand, but instead he holds onto it even tighter. Joe takes a seat in the sand and I sit down next to him, our hands still intertwined in my lap.
"Hey, Joe?" I ask quietly.
"Yeah?" he looks away from the pink sky and at me.
"What are we?" I wonder.
"What do you mean?" Joe questions.
"We've kissed a couple times, we hold hands, we spend the night together...I wear your clothes...we're basically boyfriend and girlfriend without being boyfriend and girlfriend," I blurt out.
"Do you want to be?" Joe asks. I shrug.
"Are things gonna change?" I squint, looking up at him.
"I don't think I can answer that. We'll have to find out," he nudges me. "If you want to, I want to,"
"I want to," I say, smiling. Joe nods and looks back out at the sky.
"Remember when we first met? We hated each other because we were forced to be together for publicity. We were so stubborn," Joe shakes his head, chuckling. "Now you're my real girlfriend,"
"I like the sound of that," I smile widely. Joe's eyes dart back to the horizon, the rising sun reflecting in his hazel eyes. He looks back at me and I can see him slowly leaning down. I close my eyes just in time for our lips to meet.
Demi and I sat and watched the rest of the sunrise. We talked and kissed once or twice...or a few times. I was wondering when I would finally be able to call her mine, and kiss her all the time, and not have to worry if she's with other guys. I was thinking about how we would tell everyone else.
"Do you wanna tell everybody about us?" I ask aloud.
"No," Demi says after a moment. "Let's just be normal and they'll figure it out,"
"Who do you think will figure it out first?" I wonder.
"My bet is on...Miley," Demi giggles.
"I bet Nick," I tell her.
"You're on," Demi holds out her hand.
"Wait, what do we get if we win?" I ask.
"Umm...dinner; when we get back to the city. Whoever loses has to pay," she proposes.
"Deal," I shake her hand.
