Tobiano Paint Gelding 15 years old $1200
"Scout," a 15.3 hd. chestnut and white gelding, will not work out as a lesson horse for my program because he doesn't understand personal space and is liable to step on kids accidently. He thinks he is a lap-dog, craves your affection and is overly cuddly (sometimes pushy). He is best suited for a knowledgeable horse family who will give him clear boundaries with a gentle but firm hand. He responds well to positive reinforcement and "sulls up" with negative reinforcement.
Great things about this horse: Scout is as bombproof as I've seen; handles tarps, pool noodles, loud noises and scary objects with indifference. He greatly prefers trails to arena work and goes through water without hesitation. With the limited trail riding we have done with him, he walks out on trail, goes through water, rides in front /back and ignores cows. He did try to turn around on me but once corrected, gave it up and never offered to trot home. No vices, current on vaccs, had chiropractic on his hips, teeth floated in March (due in October). He is low on the totem pole and gets along well with other horses.
Not so great things: Scout is a gassy horse but the vet says this is normal for him! Scout has never bucked, bit or kicked. However, he offered to bite and kick me the first week we started working with him. He probably came from an abusive past and is skeptical about your intentions at the beginning. He has not offered to do this since then. He needs to wear padded shoes for about 3 more shoeings (his hooves grow really slow). He needs padded shoes because he has a coffin bone bruise on his front right from having been in shoes for 3 years that were too small for his feet. He is recovering really well! Also, he gets diarrhea if you give him bute.
Scout wants your love, doesn't like rejection and once you understand him, he will transform into a really good horse for you.
